IN amongst painting for everyone else, I do find some time to paint my own stuff. With the Welsh open in less than ten days time, I wanted an entry for the single figure at least (best painted army might be beyond my grasp this year, depends on work over the next few days).
I'm also attending the ETC as part of "Team Paint", working on a pirate themed Cryx army.So a model that would be part of both events wouldn't be a bad idea.
I've had this guy 90% done for weeks now, but finally found the time to finish him off.
One thing I did since my earlier photos was glaze all his skin (apart form the face). I had gone a bit too far with my highlighting and it didn't look natural enough. A few very thin glazes of the original skin tone mellowed that out nicely. I'm going to investigate the effect glazing will have on my work a bit more going forward, usually I just throw a GW wash on and have done with it, but for display quality, this seems to be a bit smoother and avoids any glossing issues.
I also used some graded washing on the weapon to give it some colour. Both for the rust and the shadows. This might be the breakthrough I needed to improve my jacks. I have a ripjaw on my desk for practice (I own six of the little buggers now) so he might get some paint love soon, perhaps as a warm up for Malice.
So here is the leader of the Black Ogrun (or monkey pirates as I call them)
Picture isn't great, I don't get enough light in my room at the moment. I need to invest in a proper light setup. Anyone want to take out some commissions so I can afford some better lights?

Ribbet.
As a press ganger, I tend to get involved in the bi-annual model swap.
Last time (Christmas) I got to paint a minion for a chap in the states. I was really looking forward to getting the chance to paint a Croak Hunter as I loved the scuplt and had enjoyed watching PP Studio Painter Matt DP work his magic at Gencon 2010. Here was my chance.
This was painted to a high display level. For this kind of paint work, you would be looking at £30+, but you get a much better level of paint. This guy had a scenic base, wet blending, multiple glazes and more in his paint job, and took around six hours to finish. So the cost is actually pretty good per hour.
If you are interested in a higher level paint scheme, just email me and I will let you know if I have space on the table and we will work out a price.

Cygnar army paint
A clubmate asked if I would be able to paint a Cygnar infantry force for him. This is an ongoing project and I tend not to take many army scale jobs on, but I felt this would be a fun challenge and allowed me to paint something a little different.
The brief was to paint them in a scheme including the classic Cygnar blue, but with some black elements to reflect what my friend called the fascist heart of Cyngar. The force was going to include gunmages (who knew?) and I wanted a Dick Turpin, highwayman fell to those elements of the force.
The models were supplied cleaned up and assembled which is always good as it makes my life easier and means I can give a discount. They were painted to a decent tabletop level.
The B13 were a little more pricey as, despite their size, they are highly detailed character models and head to be tackled one by one rather than batch painted as a unit.
Finally, no Cygnar army is complete without this little fellow. He follows most of the Cygnar casters around for maximum gunnery. This is a higher standard paint job as reflects a character.
I have also painted a squire for the army but forgot to get pictures before I gave it back. Maybe I will grab it next time I'm at the club and get some pics.
If you have any questions about pricing or booking in a commission please do contact me at: jon.webb1983 (at) orange.net (replacing the (at) with @ unsurprisingly. Spambots need not apply.

Hordes: Minions project.
I was asked to paint some Hordes Minions for a local gaming store.
Here are the results.
First up a Wrastler. One of the more maligned models in the range, its actually not that bad in the flesh. A slight tweak of the pose wouldn't go amiss, but on the whole he turned out well.
Secondly, Bloody Barnabus the Warlock. I gave him a nice thematic scenic base, trying out some new materials. Custom bases are available on commissions, although it will add to the total cost a little depending on what is required.
I also added some nice realistic gore (no blood red daubed on these models). Using Tamiya clear red mixed with a little black and brown, some convincing gore can be created. If you leave the paint to dry slightly, then stipple it with an old brush, you get some good texture. It dries to a glossy finish for that wet look.
I'm going to try this on some zombies in the future and see if it works for open wounds as well as bloody snouts and weapons.

Quick paintjob for Salute 2011.
Tuesday night I get a phonecall from my podcasting buddy Conrad asking me if I am free to paint a model for Salute, which was in four days time! Not one to shirk from a challenge I decided to partake.
We had three new releases to paint, a Cryx Scavenger, the Ragman mercenary solo and a Menoth Flameguard Cleanser. I got the Ragman (Nick was also joining in the fun and is a good painter of white, Cryx is my chosen faction so I didn't want to spoil the fun of painting a scavenger for myself).
With such a short deadline (bearing in mind I have a job and was taking my partner out for the day for her birthday) I had a very small window of paint opportunity.
Three hours of frenzied painting later, this was the result:
Not the best work ever, but I had so little time I felt I did a reasonable job.
Hopefully I will be getting my own Ragman soon enough, so will get a second shot at the model.
Till next time...

Bringing this back from the dead.
Its time to bring the Hydra's Lair back form the dead.
With the demise of Rackham, the blog no longer had much of a function. However, I need a place to promote my commission painting services , and to give me a central place to store my pictures.
So take a look around and see what I have been painting.
If you are interested in a commission, please contact me at: jon.webb1983 (at) orange.net (replace at with @ to stop spambots).
